YWLA and Humane Society raise awareness of unwanted animals
To create an awareness of unwanted animals, the Young Women’s Leadership Academy partnered with the Humane Society of El Paso and the Junior League of El Paso to educate the community about abandoned animals. Retired teacher Mrs. Benson, the creator of Sharing Sam, and Humane Society of El Paso Volunteer/Community Outreach Coordinator Ryan Coulehan gave a presentation to the young women to tell the story of “Sam,” a puppy who was abandoned but then rescued by a family.
With the goal to show how important it is to take care of pets and all that a pet requires, the students created story boards with felt characters, accessories and activity books which will be shared with area elementary schools. In February, the YWLA students will visit with children from kindergarten through second grade to share the story of Sam.
The storyboards, characters and activity books will also be shared at an event sponsored by Junior League of El Paso at a later date. Together, the school wants to spread awareness of the importance of animal safety, responsibility and love.
