YISD Career and Technical Education programs provide students with the rigorous, content-aligned academic standards necessary to prepare students to succeed in today’s global economy. Students have opportunities to develop specialized skills and apply their theoretical knowledge in real-world settings through signature programs and technical curricula.

CAREER PATHWAY
Auto Collision & RepairOverview This course is a two-year program where students learn various tasks and skills required for employment in the Auto Collision Industry. 11th Grade In the 11th grade, students learn damage analysis and repair using various tools such as hammers, dollies, and stud welders. Students learn to properly identify damage and select the repair method best suited for the task at hand. Estimating is covered in detail and students learn the necessary critical information for properly writing an estimate. Students learn manual and electronic estimating using software such as Audatex and CCC One. Students also learn the basics of MIG Welding through the use of virtual technology, and applying it to physical exercises. Students learn to perform welds necessary to meet the requirements of the I-CAR WQST certification test. Students learn various plastic and adhesive repair techniques, which include cosmetic, two-sided repairs and tab repairs. Students take the Student ASE Non-Structural Damage Analysis and Repair certification test upon completion of the course. 12th Grade The senior year introduces students to the refinishing process. Various equipment used in refinishing is covered, such as paint guns, safety items, and spray booths. Students learn the various chemicals that are utilized in a refinishing task; these include various primers, corrosion protection, reducers and base coats. Water-based and solvent-based paint products are discussed and the importance of such products. Students learn to mask a vehicle in preparation for refinishing utilizing various masking techniques and products. Students build upon prior knowledge to repair, prime and paint a vehicle. Customer service skills are enforced as students prepare for interaction with various types of customers. Part of the course is focused on career and finance management, where students learn resume writing, interview skills and qualities that employers look for in new employees. CAREER PATHWAY
Auto TechOverview The automotive program prepares students in the area of Automotive Technology using a rigorous curriculum with a minimum of 1,080 hours of classroom instruction combined with practical experience. The curriculum provides students experience in each of the following areas: electric applications, steering and suspension, brakes, engine performance, and live shop which leads to work-based learning opportunities.
Students will work out of the Automobile Live Shop while honing their skills in maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting automobiles, and experience actual conditions that a technician faces each day in the automotive industry.
11th Grade The 11th grade automotive program is divided in half. Students receive instruction in Steering Suspension and Brake systems during one semester, and Engine Performance in the other. Steering and Suspension is an advanced program, introducing the automobile chassis and its various systems. There is an emphasis on wheel alignment, steering and suspension component repairs. This course centers on the theory of wheel alignment and steering geometry. The brake course concentrates on brake system operation theory and hydraulic theory is emphasized on actual vehicles and mock-ups. The introduction of precision measurement tools such as micrometers and dial indicators are infused to reinforce math skills. Basic machining skills are utilized with brake drums and rotor resurfacing lathes.
In the Automotive Mechanic Engine Performances course, students will address the current engine drivability problems incurred with today’s complex computerized vehicles. The introduction to diagnostic procedures and the use of oscilloscopes, diagnostic scan tools and multi meters are thoroughly addressed. Students perform hands-on activities on live engines which are used to troubleshoot and diagnose computer and performance-related problems. A Snap-on Solus Ultra Scanner course which culminates in students receiving an industry recognized certification is achieved through the use of the latest Snap-on diagnostic equipment. Language Arts skills are emphasized through the use of project-based learning. Interdisciplinary projects utilizing the computer, internet, Microsoft Word, and PowerPoint reinforce these skills.
12th Grade 12th grade Automotive Service is a two-term course where students make the leap into the automotive field. This course provides the student with actual conditions that a technician faces each day in the automotive industry. Students work on actual cars that are brought into the lab to be repaired. The vehicles belong to parents, teachers, other students, and members of the community. Students perform a variety of tasks such as tune-ups, brake jobs, wheel service, wheel alignments, and New York State Inspections. The top students are chosen to compete in various competitions, such as the GNYADA Troubleshooting competition and the SkillsUSA Automotive Technology and Service Competitions, which take place at the city, state and national levels. Here the students will display their knowledge and skills in a competition-based setting. * Students must first register with YISD.

CosmetologyOverview This course is a two-year program where students learn various tasks and skills required for employment in the Cosmetology industry. 11th Grade In Cosmetology I, students coordinate integration of academic, career, and technical knowledge and skills in this laboratory instructional sequence course designed to provide job-specific training for employment in cosmetology careers. Instruction includes sterilization and sanitation procedures, hair care, nail care, and skin care and meets the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) requirements for licensure upon passing the state examination. Analysis of career opportunities, license requirements, knowledge and skills expectations, and development of workplace skills are included. 12th Grade In Cosmetology II, students will demonstrate proficiency in academic, technical, and practical knowledge and skills. The content is designed to provide the occupational skills required for licensure. Instruction includes advanced training in professional standards/employability skills; Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) rules and regulations; use of tools, equipment, technologies, and materials; and practical skills. * Students must first register with YISD.

P-TECH Architecture & EngineeringOverview This course is a two-year program where students learn various tasks and skills required for employment in the Architectural Design Industry. 11th Grade In Advanced Architectural Design, students gain advanced knowledge and skills specific to those needed for a career in architecture and construction or to prepare a foundation towards a post-secondary degree in architecture, construction science, science drafting, interior design, and landscape architecture. Advanced Architectural Design includes the knowledge of design, design history, techniques, and tools related to the production of drawings, renderings, and skilled models for commercial or residential architectural purposes. 12th Grade Practicum in Architectural Design is an occupational-specific course designed to provide technical instruction in architectural design, safety, and work-based learning opportunities, which include internships at architecture and engineering firms. * Students must first register with YISD.

Electrical Trade - SolarOverview This course is a two-year program where students learn various tasks and skills required for employment in the welding industry. 11th Grade In Electrical Technology I, students will gain knowledge and skills needed to enter the workforce as an electrician or building maintenance supervisor, prepare for a post-secondary degree in a specified field of construction or construction management, or pursue an approved apprenticeship program. Students will acquire knowledge and skills in safety, electrical theory, tools, codes, installation of electrical equipment, and the reading of electrical drawings, schematics, and specifications. 12th Grade In Electrical Technology II, students will gain advanced knowledge and skills needed to enter the workforce as an electrician, a building maintenance technician, or a supervisor; prepare for a post-secondary degree in a specified field of construction or construction management; or pursue an approved apprenticeship program. Real EstateOverview This two-year program teaches students various tasks and skills required for employment in real estate sales and marketing. 11th & 12th Grade Students will gain advanced knowledge and skills in the area of real estate, the law of agency, the law of contracts, the use of promulgated forms, and real estate finance. Students analyze the elements of a real estate transaction, including representation, financing, title, closing, and deeds. This course allows students to reinforce, apply, and transfer academic knowledge and skills to a variety of interesting and relevant principles of real estate. In this Texas Real Estate Commission-sanctioned school, students will take six real estate qualifying courses to apply for the real estate sales agent license. * Students must first register with YISD.

Video Game Design & Web TechnologiesOverview This course is a two-year program where students learn various tasks and skills required for employment in the gaming industry. 11th & 12th Grade The Video Game Design program is a two-year program located at the Career Center at Riverside High School. Students will gain advanced knowledge and skills in computer programming and the use of real-time development platforms (Unity & Play Canvas), also known as video game engines and other technological applications. Students will learn programming languages such as JavaScript and C# which are highly used in the industry. Another focus of learning is the development of Virtual Reality on Unity. Teacher PreparationOverview This course is a two-year program where students learn various tasks and skills required for employment in education. 11th & 12th Grade Students will gain knowledge and skills in the area of child and adolescent development principles as well as principles of effective teaching and training practices. Students in the course work under the joint direction and supervision of both a teacher with knowledge of early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence education and exemplary educators in direct instructional roles with elementary-, middle school-, and high school-aged students. Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs) Involvement
A goal of our CTE program is to give students the ability to gain industry-recognized credentials while still in high school. Student certifications are available in all CTE cluster areas. These certifications and/or licenses can provide the student with credentials that will benefit them in obtaining employment in a related field or acceptance into post-secondary education. Some certifications may be obtained at no cost to the student; some may require the payment of fees by the student. Practicum Courses provide opportunities for students to participate in a learning experience that combines classroom instruction with paid and non-paid business and industry employment experiences and supports strong partnerships among school, business, and community stakeholders. CTSOs are integrated into CTE programs and courses. CTSOs extend teaching and learning through innovative programs and provide students leadership experiences at the school, state and national levels. CTSOs offer learning experience opportunities with business and community partners. CTSOs offered: BPA, FFA, FBLA, FCCLA, DECA, HOSA, Skills USA, TSA, and VEX Robotics.
