Team YO! receives recognition at international robotics competition

Cedar Grove Elementary School’s Team YO! placed 2nd in the RoboRAVE International competition held in Albuquerque, NM May 10 – 12. The all girl team was cheered on by their peers and families as they competed in the Line Following challenge.
Fifth grade students, Samaria Cabral, Camryn Cadena, and Emily Medrano earned an invitation RoboRAVE competition after placing 1st in the Ysleta Independent School District Superintendent’s Cup robotics competition in March. The YISD recognition inspired the first time contestants and they worked arduously on perfecting their codes and strategies in preparation for the RoboRAVE competition.
We are extremely proud to recognize the girls’ achievement in earning 2nd place amongst international competitors from 20 countries such as the Philippines, Colombia, and Nigeria. Robotics competitions are generally dominated by male participants, as was the case in this RoboRAVE competition where only two teams were all female teams; our Cedar Grove students represented El Paso and the other all female team were high school students from Afghanistan.
Samaria, Camryn and Emily are excited for what their future in robotics holds! They are already strategizing and working towards their next goal- the RoboRAVE 2019 International competition to take place in China. The young girls have expressed their immense gratitude towards their mentor and teacher, David Herdliska and towards their families, who all traveled to support them in the New Mexico competition. We are proud of you, team YO! You are a true inspiration to your school, siblings and the El Paso community.
