Del Valle High School 2023 Homecoming Celebration

Del Valle High School is proud to announce the 2023 Honored Ex Albert Martinez and Distinguished Alum Noel Candelaria.

Del Valle High School is proud to honor the 2023 Honored Ex, Albert Martinez, from the class of 1990. Mr. Martinez was born in Puerto Rico. At the age of four, his family relocated to El Paso where he attended public schools in the Ysleta Independent School District. While attending high school at Del Valle, he found his passion for music in the band program and was part of the inaugural Mariachi Conquistadores of Del Valle, where he helped establish a tradition of excellence the school still portrays today.

Mr. Martinez graduated from Del Valle High School with the first graduating class in 1990. He continued his education and attained his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Music Education from the University of Texas at El Paso. After completing his degree, he became a band director and directed Marching Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, and Mariachi Ensemble where he received numerous 1st Divisions at the UIL Marching Band Competition, UIL Concert/Sight Reading Contest, Jazz Festivals, and Mariachi Contests. His Marching Band and Mariachi Ensembles have also advanced and performed at their respective state contests.

As a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, he strives to inspire students by “Enriching lives through music….one student at a time.” As a trumpet player and singer, he has performed with the Electric Jazz Ensemble, the El Paso Wind Symphony as well as Mariachi Los Arrieros from El Paso and Mariachi Cobre, the premier Mariachi in Disney’s Epcot Theme Park.

Now in his 22nd year as a Texas Music Educator, he has moved to San Antonio and is now the Director of Performing Arts for Uvalde CISD and in his third year as the Mariachi Director at Morales Junior High and Uvalde High School where his students received their 1st ever State Mariachi 1st Division in the programs 25-year history.

Del Valle High School is also proud to honor the 2023 Distinguished Alum, Noel Candelaria, from the Class of 1994. A special education teacher and former teacher’s aide from El Paso, Noel is secretary-treasurer of the National Education Association, the nation’s largest professional organization. Candelaria ranks third among the Association’s leadership team. His primary responsibility is managing and maintaining the Association’s multimillion-dollar budget.

Elected amid the COVID-19 pandemic, he is the former president of the Texas State Teachers Association (TSTA).  He also served three years as TSTA vice president, which followed a distinguished tenure as president of the Ysleta Teachers Association (YTA) where he worked at YISD teaching subjects ranging from Algebra to World History.

Candelaria has also held leadership positions at the National Council of State Education Associations, NEA Member Benefits, and the National Teacher Hall of Fame (NTHF). During Noel’s leadership as chair of the Memorial to Fallen Educators, located in Emporia, Kansas, legislation was passed to designate the monument as a national memorial site. Noel has also served on numerous national committees and task forces, including the NEA Human and Civil Rights Committee.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies and education from the University of Texas at El Paso.
