Hanks Mariachi Los Trovadores wins Superior rating at UIL state contest

Congratulations to Mariachi Los Trovadores, from Hanks High School, who gave an incredible performance at the 2024 UIL State Mariachi Festival on Feb. 24 at the Seguin HS Performing Arts Center in Seguin, TX to earn a rating of Superior (Division I). They are under the direction of Orlando Guerrero, Juan Contreras, Karla Urias-Couder, and Dr. Osvaldo Altamirano. Their student leaders are Sydney Bejarano and Francisco Magaña. This is their 3rd year in a row they have scored a Division I at State and 5th year in a row they scored a Division I at Region UIL. They have performed for Mexican boxer legend Julio Cesar Chavez, have received Gold at the Anaheim Performing Arts Festival every year, and have performed for the Superintendent State Board in Austin, TX.


The remaining three YISD high schools who advanced to state were awarded an Excellent rating (Division II). They include:

  • Del Valle High School’s Mariachi de los Conquistadores is under the direction of Keith Morales and Valentin Gonzalez. 
  • Eastwood High School's Mariachi Reyna is under the direction of Amy Jaquez, Maritza Loya, Javier Loya Jr, and Ana Lisa Portillo. This is the 2nd year in a row for Eastwood to advance to state. Student leaders are Joan Manquero, Felix Montalvo, Matthew Gonzalez, Sonny Carbajal, and Daniel Loya. Guitarron de Golpe player named Michael Vite was honored to be a part of the TMEA 2024 All-Region Mariachi.
  • Riverside High School's Mariachi Estrella de Riverside is under the direction of Ramon Acosta, Monica Gutierrez, Jason Lauturner and Angel Hernandez. Student leaders are Stephanie Cruz, Anthony Diaz, Andres Orona, Luis Pereda, and Emily Valdez.

During the state contest, each mariachi ensemble received a rating of Division I, II, III, IV, or V from each of the three judges based on the UIL Constitution and Contest Rules.

In addition, each ensemble received a 30-minute clinic with a nationally recognized mariachi educator/performer at the conclusion of their performance. The focus of this interaction will be on musicianship and the artistry of making music.
