Capistrano Elementary School kicked off their new Girl Power Club with a presentation from Iris Lopez, Founder and Executive Director of “Mija, Yes you can.” The club is open to Capistrano girls in the 3rd to 5th grade. The kickoff was held on September 27 with girls and their parents attending.
Lopez gave the girls background about herself and how she started “Mija, Yes you can.” The Mija Project creates workshops for women of all ages, as well as partners with local schools to mentor young ladies in the community. They are a team of women who want to remind the world to never underestimate the ability of a determined woman.
Lopez explained to the girls how it’s okay to be themselves and how to support one another. She also talked to them about social media, mental health and asked them to share what they want to be when they grow up.
The goal of the club is to empower girls to love and understand themselves while supporting each other and giving back to the community. Throughout the year, the club will be inviting presenters to speak to the members. They are also planning field trips with the first one to Paul Foster's School of Medicine. In addition, the club is also working on service projects.
The club sponsors are teachers Debra Callender and Virginia Beltran-Aldaco.
