RHS senior Dafne Medina selected for President’s Award
Riverside High School senior Dafne Medina was recognized at the YISD Board of Trustees meeting on Nov. 9 with the President’s Award. Dafne has spent a significant portion of her high-school years volunteering at a local assisted living facility, earning well past the required 80 hours of community service for graduation.
In 2014, Dafne first visited the Loving Care Assisted Living Facility for senior citizens as part of the Ranger Student Council, which adopted the facility. The happy and welcoming demeanor of the residents was something Dafne would never forget, and it inspired her to continue volunteering at the facility. She visits the home from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday, and the heartwarming response from the residents is what drives her to return every week.
Dafne is so well known at the facility that she is entrusted with helping count and keep track of the donation inventory. This year, she is also helping organize a donation drive for the facility with the Ranger Student Council. Her family has even decided to move her grandfather to the home, because Dafne is considered part of the Loving Care Assisted Living family now. Dafne’s generosity and sense of community spirit runs deep, and we are proud to call her one of our own!
The President’s Award is given by the President of the Board of Trustees to a YISD student who has demonstrated exceptional and/or innovative, out-of-the-ordinary service to others, particularly those within the YISD community. This award will be presented to the selected recipient a maximum of once per month during the regularly scheduled meeting of the YISD Board of Trustees.
Eligible YISD students must be nominated for the award by a school principal, assistant principal, or Trustee; and must be in good academic and disciplinary standing.
