Eastwood MS student honored with President’s Award
Eastwood Middle School eighth-grader Xavier Galindo is a basketball player who is enrolled in a third-period Wellness Inclusion Class – and this is where he met Nathan, a Special Education student with his own passion for basketball.
Xavier took it upon himself to mentor Nathan in basketball, helping him improve his game as much as possible both physically and developmentally. But perhaps most interesting was the unexpected friendship that developed between the pair – a friendship that spread outside the classroom and onto the court.
After Xavier talked to the basketball coach, Nathan became an honorary member of the basketball team. He practiced with them, led them out onto the court during a game, and participated in pre-game activities. At Xavier’s insistence, Nathan sat on the team bench during the game and in the final moments, everyone agreed to let him play – and he scored two shots as the crowd cheered him on!
Xavier’s actions prove he is not only kind and helpful, but selfless and generous. He gave up his time in the limelight so Nathan could experience his moment of sports glory. Xavier’s kindness makes him a stand-out among Ysleta ISD students, and we honor his service to others with this month’s President’s Award.
The President’s Award is given by the President of the Board of Trustees to a YISD student who has demonstrated exceptional and/or innovative, out-of-the-ordinary service to others, particularly those within the YISD community. This award will be presented to the selected recipient a maximum of once per month during the regularly scheduled meeting of the YISD Board of Trustees.
Eligible YISD students must be nominated for the award by a school principal, assistant principal, or Trustee; and must be in good academic and disciplinary standing.
