YISD kicks off 2019-20 supper program at 10 schools
As part of its continuing efforts to support the wellness, health, and development of students, the Ysleta Independent School District (YISD) will kick off its after-school “supper program” at 10 campuses in the 2019-20 school year, beginning Monday, Sept. 9.
The supper program, which provides free and nutritious meals to active students who remain on campus after school for extracurricular activities, will be offered at the following campuses:
· Bel Air High School, 731 N. Yarbrough
· Del Valle High School, 950 Bordeaux
· Eastwood High School, 2430 McRae
· Hanks High School, 2001 N. Lee Trevino
· Parkland High School, 5932 Quail
· Riverside High School, 301 Midway
· Ysleta High School, 8600 Alameda
· Bel Air Middle School, 7909 Ranchland
· Del Valle Middle School, 8674 North Loop
· Young Women’s Leadership Academy, 8040 Yermoland
The supper meals are being offered at various times depending on the dismissal time at each campus, but generally begin about 4 p.m. The meals are free of charge to children 18 years and younger, and are available for purchase by adults. The supper program is funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Child and Adult Care Food Program.
Given the numerous middle- and high-schoolers who stay on campus after school for sports, theater, band, or other clubs, the supper program gives students access to a nutritional meal in the cafeteria before rehearsal or practice. The supper program was first piloted in January 2017 at Ysleta High School, and expanded to include four schools by September 2017 and eight campuses in September 2018.
This program is part of YISD’s overall efforts to increase student access to healthy meals. Free breakfast is already provided for all students at every YISD campus, and for the first time ever, the vast majority of YISD campuses – 85 percent – are also providing free lunch meals to students this year through the USDA’s Community Eligibility Provision (CEP).
