Tierra Del Sol ES kicks off WatchD.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students)
Tierra Del Sol Elementary School has kicked off their WatchD.O.G.S.(Dads of Great Students) program for the 2019-2020 school year. The program is comprised of fathers and father figures who build a sense of safety and security with their visible presence in the building and as they become an integral part of the school community.
Tierra Del Sol Elementary has always had outstanding support from the community in meetings, conferences, and events, so the program is a perfect addition and great way for male role models to get more involved.
The program itself is simple: dads, stepdads, grandpas, uncles, family friends, etc. are asked to take one day (or half-day) during the school year and spend it at school. DOGS check-in at the office in the morning with their YISD volunteer badge and receive an orange WatchDOG vest to wear so students and staff can easily recognize them. They receive a brief orientation and schedule, make an appearance on the announcements-- and then they get to work! Duties include welcoming students as they arrive, securing the campus and its perimeter, sitting with/mentoring students in class, eating with children at lunch, playing and connecting with students at recess.
WatchDOG participants talk about the rewards they get from spending a day being a positive role model for children. Students talk about the pride they feel having their dad at school, or the connection they made to someone else’s dad. For interest in the program, contact Tierra Del Sol Elementary at 915-434-5800.
