Third-grader Brandon Lopez honored with President's Award
Sageland Elementary School third-grader Brandon Lopez had a dream of becoming a meteorologist, which came true last year when he served as the school’s weathercaster during their morning announcements.
Every day, Brandon would report the weather to his class – and his teacher soon recommended he share his weather knowledge and skills with the whole campus. He was quickly recruited by the principal to report the daily weather to all students during morning announcements, and soon became a celebrity among his peers, faculty, and staff. His fellow students look forward to hearing his weather report every day, as he includes recommendations on what they should wear – including whether jackets would be needed for the outdoor transition to P.E. and recess.
During the school’s Career Day last school year, Brandon was discovered by the anchor team from KTSM-TV Channel 9. As a result, weathercaster Roxy Van Ruiten invited Brandon to the TV station and featured him during a newscast. Brandon will continue to report the weather live during Sageland's morning announcements this school year. We honor his contributions with the August 2022 President’s Award
