Ysleta ISD wins national designation for music education

For the first time ever, the Ysleta Independent School District has won the 2024 Best Communities for Music Education award from the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation for the district’s outstanding commitment to music education.

In particular, the designation recognizes and celebrates outstanding efforts by Ysleta ISD teachers, administrators, parents, students, and community leaders who have prioritized music education as part of an overall, well-rounded education.

“I am exceptionally proud of the district’s  K-12 music programs, as it is through the efforts of all of our music teachers that this accolade was made possible,” said Ysleta ISD Director of Fine Arts Scott Thoreson.

“In particular, I’d like to take special note of the exponential growth we've had in both the mediums of mariachi and choir, as well as the consistent top-level performances of all of our bands,” Thoreson added.

To qualify for the Best Communities designation, districts and schools across the nation answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instructional time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs.

Designations were then awarded to districts and schools that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education, officials said.

The Best Communities for Music Education schools and communities demonstrate a commitment to ensuring music learning opportunities are available for every student and provide an example for other communities to follow.
Throughout the program's 25 years, the foundation has recognized over 1,000 school districts and schools, combined, in 43 states. The impact of the award is unique and different for each recipient, although all recipients report the sense of pride, joy, and respect it brings to their communities, NAMM Foundation officials said.

The foundation advances active participation in music-making across the lifespan by supporting scientific research, philanthropic giving, and public service programs. For more information about the NAMM Foundation, please visit
