Roberto Aguirre (Alto Saxophone) and Carlos Gutierrez (Tenor Saxophone) members of the Ysleta HS
Band recently participated in four days of rehearsals directed by nationally recognized conductors during
the 2023 TMEA Clinic/Convention. They performed with the 5A All State Symphonic Band on Saturday,
February 11, 2023, at the Henry B. González Convention Center (San Antonio,TX).

They were chosen for this prestigious honor through a competitive process held this year across the state
at District, Region, and Area levels. Both are private students of Mr. Jimmy Olivas and are members of the
Ysleta HS Band. This is Roberto Aguirre’s second time to perform as a member of a TMEA All-State organization,
and Carlos Gutierrez’s first opportunity.

High school students selected to perform in the All-State concerts have competed through auditions to qualify
at the state level. All-State is the highest honor a Texas music student can receive. 1,875 students are
selected through a process that began with over 70,000 students from around the state vying for this honor to
perform in one of 18 ensembles.

Individual musicians perform selected music for a panel of judges who rank each instrument part. Roberto and
Carlos are part of the top 2.6% of student musicians who initially audition to become All-State musicians.

Individually, Roberto Aguirre finished ranked #6 for 5A Alto Saxophonists.  Carlos Gutierrez finished ranked #2 for
5A Tenor Saxophonists.  It is important to remember that this is for the ENTIRE STATE OF TEXAS.
