Two Ysleta Community Learning Center (YCLC) students were recently named among the best in the state by the Texas Association of Literacy and Adult Education (TALAE) and will be recognized for their achievements at a conference next month.

YCLC student Claudia Trejo won the 2022 High School Equivalency Adult Learner of the Year Award, while Brenda Gonzalez was honored as the 2022 English Language Learner Adult Learner of the Year for demonstrating leadership in formal or non-traditional learning environments. 

Students will be recognized in person at the TALAE conference taking place Feb. 10 in Houston.

As part of Ysleta ISD, YCLC provides classes to adults to help them gain the skills, knowledge, and certifications needed to increase their employment opportunities. YCLC offers classes for the GED, English language, and for industry certifications such as Microsoft Office Specialist, Quickbooks, Bookkeeping and CDL-B with P and S endorsements. In addition, they serve individuals with degrees from other countries to gain the English needed to enter their profession in the United States. Classes are free for Texas residents who meet the qualifications.

TALAE was formed in 1968 as the Texas Association for Continuing Adult Education with the purpose of providing professional development, networking, and statewide recognition to adult education programs in Texas.

Each year, the TALAE organization sets aside student membership dues to provide academic awards for TALAE student members who earn a high school equivalency and want to pursue higher education; and ESL students who have demonstrated exceptional determination through their effort, persistence, leadership, and community involvement.
