Protecting our students starts at home. Practicing safe gun storage helps prevent accidents, saves lives and keeps firearms out of the wrong hands.
Did you know?
Firearms remain a leading cause of death among children and teens in Texas. Safe storage, Keeping guns locked and unloaded, with ammunition stored separately, can help reduce Risk of unintentional injury, suicide, or violent incidents.
What YISD Families Should Know
Per Texas law (House Bill 3, Section 37.222), all school districts must provide parents and Guardians with information about safe firearms storage. YISD is committed to supporting A culture of safety both at school and at home.

Safe Gun Storage Steps
Lock and secure all firearms.
Store ammunition separately from guns.
If you see a gun, do not touch it. Leave the area and notify an adult immediately.
Talking to Your Kids: What to Teach
STOP if you come across a gun
DO NOT TOUCH it under any circumstances.
LEAVE THE AREA calmly and quickly.
TELL AN ADULT right away.
Reminder for YISD Families
Guns are not toys. Treat every gun as if it’s loaded.
Ask about gun storage when your child visits a friend’s home.
Encourage open dialogue and safety with your children.
