At the Aug. 27 board meeting, Student Councils from Bel Air, Del Valle, Eastwood, Hanks, Parkland, Riverside, and Ysleta high schools were recognized for earning numerous awards from the Texas Association of Student Councils (TASC) and the National Association of Student Councils (NASC) for overall excellence, projects, and videos.
The Top 10 Collaborative Project Award was earned by Student Councils who joined forces to support each other’s Homecoming parades by providing post-parade clean-up, allowing each school to fully enjoy its celebration without the stress of cleanup duties. This honor was awarded to Bel Air, Del Valle, Hanks, Parkland, and Riverside high schools.
Hanks High School was recognized as a Top 10 Project Winner for its 2024 Halloween celebration, Trick-or-Treat Knight. Selected by TASC as one of the state’s most outstanding projects, the event offered children a safe alternative to traditional trick-or-treating by inviting families into the school’s hallways. The celebration drew 190 families and more than 600 attendees.
Eastwood High School also stood out, with its project New Year, New Me Week chosen as one of the state’s top 10 best videos. The Troopers organized a week of activities focused on drugs, alcohol, safety, and health (DASH). Highlights included Reflect on Self-Love, Fridays for Friendship, and Don’t Do Drugs: Set High Goals.
All seven Ysleta ISD comprehensive high schools earned the TASC Sweepstakes Award, which recognizes achievement in Outstanding Student Council, Pride & Patriotism, Energy & Environment, DASH, and documented community service.
Finally, the NASC National Council of Excellence Award was presented to Bel Air, Del Valle, Hanks, Parkland, and Riverside high schools. This national honor is given to councils that maintain strong year-round programs and strengthen their schools and communities through leadership activities. The award is based on the four pillars of NASC: Leadership, Service, Engagement, and Student Voice.
