The National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI), in collaboration with Ysleta Independent School District, has launched a two-year program to advance STEM Readiness at military-connected schools.  The initiative is made possible through dedicated funding from the Department of Defense’s STEM Education & Outreach office (DoD STEM), via the Defense STEM Education Consortium (DSEC).

"We are grateful for this generous investment by the National Math & Science Initiative, which will help teachers offer stronger, more engaging STEM instruction and college-readiness opportunities that open up additional pathways for our students to succeed in college, career, and life," said Dr. Xavier De La Torre, Superintendent of Schools at the Ysleta Independent School District.

"We look forward to working closely with NMSI to empower our educators to inspire curiosity and a love of learning among students – including those from military-connected families – that will stay with them long after they leave our district," Dr. De La Torre added.

Military-connected students often face unique academic challenges, moving an average of six to nine times during their K–12 education. NMSI’s evidence-based professional development services help ensure continuity in learning by preserving local control while creating consistent, high-quality instruction across schools. This approach helps students stay on track from their first day at a new school, easing transitions and supporting long-term academic success.

“Preparing the next generation of STEM professionals is a national imperative,” said Jeremy Anderson, CEO of NMSI. “Every district—urban, rural, and military-connected—plays a vital role in building a workforce that can meet the demands of a rapidly evolving global economy. This partnership reflects our commitment to equipping educators and students with the tools they need to thrive in every sector.”
