Mateo Olivas is a student very involved in extracurricular activities. In his time at Del Valle High School, he has participated in five different clubs: Speech and Debate, Guitar, Robotics, Math team, and Hi‑Q. Mateo has been in Speech and Debate the longest, since freshman year. In that time, he has become a three‑time state qualifier while learning to come out of his shell and speak up. In sophomore year, Mateo joined Guitar and Robotics. Since then, he’s become a two‑time state qualifier in UIL Solo and Ensemble, exploring the world of classical guitar and putting on various performances for the Del Valle family. Being his Robotics team’s programmer, he and his team have made top 3 twice in UIL Computer Science. When junior year started, Mateo joined Del Valle’s Math team, focusing mainly on science competitions. That same year, he made 2nd place for UIL Science, claiming first in biology and chemistry, advancing to regional competition. During senior year, Mateo joined the Hi‑Q team, helping out his team while managing college and scholarship applications. It was at the start of this December when Mateo got the life‑changing news that he had been matched with Rice University. Being someone who loves math and science, Mateo plans to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering with a focus in Aerospace at Rice University, as well as joining their engineering teams such as the Rice Eclipse team.
