Points of Pride
Desertaire Elementary - Home of the Silverhawks is one of 1O schools out of 35 elementaries that have earned and awarded an "A" from the Texas Education Agency.
The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, commonly referred to as its acronym STAAR, are a series of state-mandated standardized tests used to assess a student's achievements and knowledge learned in the grade level. These tests are administered to 3rd through 5th grade students in the area of Math, Science, Reading and Writing in the spring of the current school year. Based on the spring of 2019 test results, our current and previous students improved their scores and scoring the campus an A district wide. This could not have been possible without the help of our teachers, staff and parents for their hard work and dedication.
Gifted and Talented
Ysleta Independent School District’s Gifted and Talented program is committed to providing exemplary educational opportunities that recognize the unique, social, emotional and intellectual needs of gifted and talented students. The Ysleta Independent School District is committed to serving the unique needs of intellectually gifted students from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds through an array of qualitatively different learning opportunities. Identified students will demonstrate the ability to interpret and evaluate information; use the process of inquiry to solve problems and abstract concepts. Students function in a total learning environment, make choices based on data collection and interpretation, self-knowledge of needs and interests, assume responsibility for choices and decisions, and work effectively with others to solve problems.
Our students compete with one another as well as with other school from other districts in the annual Team Quest competition. Team Quest is an academic competition designed specifically for gifted and talented students that challenges them in areas of engineering, mathematics, and creativity.
Challenges are solved using a hands-on approach – allowing teams to apply their knowledge to real life problems. The goal of the program is for students to carry these important skills into their everyday lives while incorporating creativity, imagination, and engineering along the way. All challenges are aligned with current TEKS standards with a heavy emphasis on S.T.E.A.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) education.
This year our students will be exposed to and take part of the Young Rembrandts – The Power of Drawing program. The Young Rembrandts' method focuses on teaching children to draw, using demonstration and a structured step-by-step process. Through the process of weekly instruction students are exposed to a wide variety of subject matter, artistic concepts, art history and mastery of their materials. Young Rembrandts helps children develop the skill, tools and confidence to continue participating in the arts. With the help of Young Rembrandts', our goal is for students to receive a foundational art literacy that invites them to continue an appreciation of the arts throughout their lifetime.
We encourage parents and community members to participate in our volunteer program to help meet the needs of our students and campus. We currently have 17 active volunteers. With the help of our parent volunteers our school dances, popcorn Fridays and community events have been a huge success. Thank you to all of our volunteers for choosing to share your time and talent with us all. Make a difference, become a volunteer!
With the help of our community, our students received new classroom furniture this year, specifically designed to meet the needs of all. From student desks to classroom carpets and everything in between, our teachers and students are able to provide and receive instruction in a more effective and efficient classroom environment. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you to all.
